The WRX STi
The Impreza WRX and its higher end model, the Impreza WRX STi (recent models drop the Impreza branding and are simply named WRX and WRX STi) are notable in tuner and enthusiast circles thanks to their rally-inspired performance and distinctive boxer engine. The duo, with their AWD system, turbocharged engine, aggressive design and high-performance capabilities, is an iconic car that stands out from the typical rear-wheel-drive coupe form factor seen among tuner cars.

Boxer Engine
Central to Subaru's identity in the tuner scene is the horizontally opposed "boxer" engine. This engine configuration, known for its low center of gravity and unique power delivery, is a key part in Subaru's performance cars. The boxer engine is featured within all Subaru vehicles, from the standard Impreza and Outback to legendary cars such as the limted edition 22B. Within the WRX and its STi variant, it is turbocharged and is famous for the strength of its boost and acceleration. It has a distinctive "growl" noise due to the unequal length headers within the engine structure. While this engine is mainly discussed in relation to Subaru on this website, Porsche also is well known for implementing boxer engines.

The BRZ
On the other end of the spectrum, the Subaru BRZ, developed in collaboration with Toyota (also sold as the Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S), has gained popularity for its lightweight design and nimble handling. While the BRZ serves a different purpose compared to the WRX STi, its rear-wheel-drive layout and focus on balance make it a favorite among enthusiasts looking for a more accessible and drift-friendly platform.
